There is not much known about safety of hair dyes during pregnancy. As per the few animal and human studies hair dyes during pregnancy do not cause any harm to the developing fetus. When one apply hair dye, very small quantity of chemicals are being absorbed in the body. The chances of these minute amount of chemicals harming the fetus are very low. Still it is better that you consult your physician before taking any decision.

According to The Organization of Teratology Information Services (OTIS) there are no reports of hair dye causing any changes during pregnancy. Still one need to take certain hair dyeing precautions especially during pregnancy. First hair dyeing precaution is that don't leave dye on hair for longer duration. Hair dyes for longer duration might cause serious problems to the body as well as the developing fetus.

Though there are no evidences showing harmful effect of hair dyes during pregnancy but still to be on safer side ask you friend to dye her hair after 1st trimester that is in her second trimester. During second trimester the development of the baby is less vulnerable. And as hair dyeing precaution during pregnancy, instead of all over hair dyeing or coloring better to go for frosting, highlighting, streaking or painting.

You may have heard that vegetable dyes are a good alternative if you want to avoid using synthetic chemical agents during pregnancy. While applying hair dye it is advisable to wear hand gloves. This will restrict the harmful chemicals of dye to touch the fingers. I personally this is the most important dyeing hair precaution.
